There's been plenty of talk about the strength of the quarterback cla s ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. But the one following it, which could feature Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, is also expected to be strong.Allar has emerged as one of the nation's most impre sive sophomore quarterbacks in his first season as Penn State's starter, throwing Chris Carson Jersey just one interception over his first nine games. Here's a look into how Allar projects as a prospect, plus former Nittany Lions standout quarterback Christian Hackenberg's thoughts on him:2025 NFL Draft projection: 1st-2nd roundIn the midst of his sophomore season, Allar is not yet eligible to declare for the NFL Draft. Based upon his performance during the 2023 season and the projection for how he's expected to continue on an upswing in 2024.So far this season, Allar has completed 62.8% of his pa ses for 1,895 yards with 20 touchdowns and just one interception on 228 attempts. One of the first qualities that stands out about Allar is an NFL-ready frame at 6-foot-5 and 243 pounds. He doesn't project as a true dual-threat quarterback, but he's got enough mobility and ability to evade pre sure, which is key for quarterbacks who project mostly as traditional pocket pa sers in the modern era of football.Allar, especially for a quarterback of his years, has great pocket presence and has shown a lot of reason for optimism. As his stat line would reflect, Allar has proven one of the most effective quarterbacks in the nation when it comes to taking care of the football avoiding turnovers. How he builds upon his ceiling, which is a very high one, will be something to watch.MORE:Hackenberg on Allar from a tangibles perspective: "He does things for a guy at a young age in terms of checking the ball down, staying on schedule and being efficient that I never had when I was playing and when you look around a see a lot of guys who have the type of talent he does, they struggle finding that, really, until they're in the league because they just get away with stuff at the college level.""I think he proce ses well, I think he plays on time, he doesn't hang onto the ball too long. There are things he's going to start feeling, the clock is going to speed up, his movement inside the pocket and understanding of protections and all of that is hopefully going to continue to develop."Hackenberg on Allar from an intangibles perspective: "I love his temperament. I think he's very poised for a guy who hasn't nece sarily been in the center of the spotlight. The way he carries himself and the way he plays is still yet to be seen. He had one big test against Ohio State and I don't think it turned out the way he wanted, so I think he's got a great opportunity this week."Allar is still a developmental prospect in multiple facets, something that is typical of a quarterback at this experience level and he should become more polished overall with time.Footwork and shortening his throwing motion (which plays a big role in overall accuracy) were two Tedric Thompson Jersey things Allar needed to work on heading into his first year at Penn State and he's progre sively gotten better.Improvement under pre sure, where Allar has mi sed some throws and his proce s has faltered, will be something to monitor, but also something that should get better with time. He could also get better in the deep pa sing game and establishing more equal levels of accuracy at all parts of the field, whereas he's in a good rhythm in the shorter pa sing game.Hackenberg: "When you're watching him throw the football down the field, really anything past about 20 yards, I think he tries to be too perfect and he doesn't really have the timing, anticipation feel for space to give guys chances. You see a lot of balls thrown out of bounds. You see a lot of balls thrown three or four yards ahead of guys and with the type of talent he has at Penn State, not only within the receiver room but within the tight end room... just getting a better feel for that intermediate to deeper pa sing game and spatial awarene s of where to put the ball to give his guys chances. But to me, that's easy to learn. That's just reps, it's timing, that's seeing it over and over again, understanding coverages a little bit more."MORE:Kerry CollinsWhere arm strength, frame, and pocket presence are concerned, there are many elements of Allar's game that are similar to Collins' game. The two also come from similar backgrounds, with Collins also playing out his college career at Penn State. If this comes true, Allar will go down as one of the best quarterbacks in Penn State history, as Collins set multiple records, finishing out his final season with a 66.7 percent completion rate, 2,679 pa sing yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions.Hackenberg: Carson Wentz/C.J. StroudHackenberg: "He's really not that point guard type of guy like a Bryce Young or a Patrick Tre Flowers Jersey Mahomes or a Caleb Williams even, extending plays, going off-platform, all these crazy different things...It's almost like a Carson Wentz-ish type of feel. A guy who is athletic enough... can he get in a good situation and get something developed. That's kind of what I've seen in Drew. I think he's a little bit more accurate than Carson Wentz was in that intermediate game already. I think he's a hybrid between that and someone who is kind of a facilitator, maybe like a C.J. Stroud or something like that.""You want to kind of see the offense mature. Building off their run game, their style of play. I think they finally have gotten the offensive line set up with some good depth after years of that not really being an emphasis... there are a lot of opportunities for him to put himself in the conversation of being a guy who isn't nece sarily going to be a system prospect, but a guy who can elevate the play of others around him and be a focal point for a franchise. Raw talent is there. Now, it's just about applying it and that falls on the coaching staff and development and him not being afraid to make mistakes and letting it fly a couple times."
